Came to the US on the SS Rotterdam, which left Rotterdam on August 11, 1898 and arrived in New York on August 18. The ship manifest says that he was a 28-year-old unmarried tailor who paid for his passage himself and was coming to New York to live with his brother, S. Perlmann (Shaye/Charles?) at 165 E. 102nd St., NY.

Notes:

According to the Latvian State Archives, the "Courland Tax Administration" notes that in 1891 he lived in Libau at Beregovaya Street in the house of Zeltaborn.

He actually left from Copenhagen, Denmark, with his wife and three youngest daughters to attend Lena's wedding. We do not know how they got to Copenhagen from Libau, Latvia. He came to America on the S.S. Hellig Olav, which left Copenhagen on August 24, 1904 and arrived in New York on September 6.

He worked as a tailor in Latvia and in New York.

Birth:
In January 1920 Census he listed his age as 87, suggesting that he was born in 1832-33. However he was not yet born when the 1834 List of Male Jews Entitled to Reside in Hasenpoth was recorded. His brother Isser, age 2 at that time, was the youngest one listed. And there was a brother David born between them. So Lazar could not have been born before 1835.

Lazar married Fredricka (Feige) GORDON Abt 1867, Latvia. Fredricka (daughter of Nathan GORDON and Lena (Lea) FRIEDMANN) was born Oct 1847, Jelgava (Mitau), Latvia; died 23 Feb 1931, Bronx, New York; was buried , Riverside Cemetery, Saddle Brook, Bergen County, New Jersey. [Group Sheet]

Ship, the Hellig Olav, left Copenhagen on August 24, 1904 and arrived in New York on September 6. She travelled with her husband and their three youngest daughers to attend daughter Lena's wedding.

Age on death certificate listed as 75. Really she was most likely 83 (although headstone says 88).

According to the Latvian records, Lazer's mother's name was Perre. On
his death certificate, however, his mother's name is listed as
Rebecca.

On May 13, 1857, he was chosen as deputy for burial society committee (according to the Kurlandia Gubernskya Vedemosti, the official Russian Government Gazette, for the Jewish Community of Courland, Volume 42, 1857).
