In 1925, 14-year-old Bernardo Seibel arrived in Brazil, coming from Krakow, Poland, with his father, Salomon. In a typical immigrant struggle to make a living in a new country, and after several jobs, he started to work in the furniture retail business in 1935. In 1946, he became a partner in a small furniture factory at Birigüi, in the hinterland of the State of São Paulo, which flourished well in the following years. In 1961, living again in São Paulo, he acquired LEO Madeiras, a small wood distribution business located in the Gasômetro area, in the district of Brás. In 1985, the Madelânda Group was created (later renamed "The Ligna Group") through the acquisition of Brasimet's share control, a major Brazilian player in the metallurgical industry. From 1990-1992, the Ligna Group intensified its operations in the furniture industry and became a large manufacturer of decorative laminates by acquiring Formica Corporation in Brazil and in Argentins, Lammet in Holland, and finally the Formiplac Group in Brazil, which was Satipel's owner at the time. In 1996 (the year Bernardo died), the Ligna Group started to operate in the home center retail business in a joint venture with the French Group Leroy Merlin. Today his sons, Salo and Helio Seibel, continue to run the Ligna Group. [source: Ligna Group brochure; see the Ligna Group's history on the Satipel website]

Notes:
According to his nephew Moyses Resnitzky, Benjamin came to Brazil with his parents in 1935, when he was 13. The youngest son, Benjamin was the only child to study in the university, where he became a "communist leader." Because of the strong anti-communist political situation in Brazil in 1952 (and because he was still a Polish citizen), he was jailed and extradited. Instead of going to France, however, Benjamin decided to return to Poland, where he was a radio and tv journalist. Because of the antisemitism there, he went to Viet Nam with the Polish delegation and lived in Saigon during the late 1950's. He later returned to Poland, where for a long time he was Chief of the Radio Warsaw short wave broadcast in Spanish to Latin American countries. He had problems with the Polish Government when the Solidarity movement started and was once close with to Lech Walesa. Although he thought about leaving Poland, his wife Wanda did not agree. After he retired, he gave Iberian Culture lessons at the Warsaw University.
