Name |
Charles Herman BILSKY |
Born |
15 May 1887 [1] |
Gender |
Male |
Occupation |
owned dry goods and grocery store and scrap yard; later, owned buildings [2] |
- According to his granddaughter, Phillis Bilsky Wolk: "My grandfather Charles was born in Clarksville, Tennessee and did lots of odd jobs as a teenager. When he got married to Bessie Dattel, they moved to Sunflower, Mississippi, to open a dry goods store. They then moved to Paris, Tennessee to open another dry goods store. (Issy and Toby were born there.) Then they moved back to Clarksville and opened a department store. (Ruben and Celia born there.) Then they moved to Forest City, Arkansas, and opened dry goods and a scrap yard. Uncle Issy ran the Scrap, and Dad [Ruben] and Uncle Toby ran the dry good then grocery store. The boys went into the army and, after the war, moved to Memphis, Tennessee. 'Papa' retired and moved to Memphis so Aunt Celia could meet Jewish boys. Papa then had some properties. (I used to go with him as a child to collect rents.) The true wandering Jews!"

Notes |
- According to his granddaughter, Phillis Bilsky Wolk: "His name was Charles, but he thought it was fancy to have a middle name, so he added the Herman himself, and liked to be called "C.H." and had that on his grocery store sign."
